The girls were pretending to be doctors for some toys just like Doc McStuffins. They were using a MagnaDoodle to give their toys x-rays. Alyson scribbled something on the MagnaDoodle, looked down at it on top of her stuffed lamb, and exclaimed, "Uh oh! She has a tree in her tummy!"

Alyson was sitting next to me on the couch watching the Disney Junior app. She was sitting so close that she was almost on top of me, but I didn't mind. Madelyn was sitting on the other side of Alyson playing on the iPad. It was starting to get dark in the living room.

Me: Madelyn, can you turn the light on? I can't get up because I have someone kind of on top of me.
Alyson after looking at me and scooting away: I'm sorry!
Me: I didn't mind.
Alyson, scooting back to me: Oh!

While eating the a brownie (with ice cream) that I made for my birthday dessert, Alyson announced with a full mouth, "Mommy is the best baker in the whole west world!" Pretty sure she meant "wide world". Also, would like to thank the Ghirardelli brownie mix I had on hand.

(As reported by Mom)

Alyson and her grandma were playing this morning with an empty lemon juice container shaped like a lemon. Alyson was going to make a lemon drink.

Alyson: I can't get the water.
Mom squirted the pretend lemon juice in her mouth and puckered up because it was sour.
Alyson: I want some.
Mom squirted some in her mouth.
Alyson, puckering up her mouth and pretending to spit it out: Oh, this is too spicy!

24 January 2016

Before the blizzard even hit, we had plans for the girls to spend the night with Grandma and Grandpa tonight. Since the roads are still a mess, we decided to go through with the plan and walk them the less than a mile over there. About two blocks in, Alyson got tired and didn't want to walk anymore, so Tony started carrying her on his shoulders. A little more than halfway there:

Tony: You're getting heavy.
Alyson: I know.
Tony: You know?
Alyson: Yes because I'm three and because I'm Alyson.

Alyson came with Madelyn and me to Madelyn's basketball practice this evening. During the practice, Alyson and I were playing with a basketball and horsing around a bit. At one point, she kept trying to grab my nose, so I was trying to get her to stop.

Me, hugging her: Time for a cuddle break?
Alyson, reaching for my nose: No! Time for a nose break!

Alyson was playing with two friendship bracelets that are still on the tag of a stuffed animal she got for her birthday.

Me: Do you want me to take those off of the tag?
Alyson: Yeah. What do I do with them?
Me: Their friendship bracelets. You keep one and give them to your best friend.
Alyson: I'll give one to Madelyn.
Me: Is Madelyn your best friend?
Alyson: She's my best friend sometimes.

Alyson: My party's already over!
Julie: That's why I'm taking it down!

Alyson talked to Aunt Becca on Facetime, and Aunt Becca sang her "Happy Birthday." A little while later, Tony told Alyson that someone else wanted to sing her happy birthday, and Nana and Poppop called on Facetime. As they were getting ready to go, but hadn't sung yet.

Alyson: But they didn't sing me "Happy Birthday!"
Tony, interpreting a bit for Nana and Poppop: She wants you to sing her "Happy Birthday."
Nana: Oh, okay, we can sing.

They sang to Alyson.

Alyson: Mommy..... I hurt my leg on my balloon....
Me: Silly girl, your balloon can't really hurt your leg.

She started playing again and talking to her balloon.

Me: Let me know when inanimate objects start talking back to you.
Alyson: My balloon can't talk because it doesn't have ears!

12 January 2016

First

Alyson was refusing to eat her cheeseburger during dinner.

Me: Eat your burger.
Alyson: No. I want to eat my fries.
Me: Eat your sandwich.
Alyson: That's not a sandwich!
Me: It's something between two pieces of bread, so it's a sandwich.
Madelyn, understanding me: Yeah, eat your sandwich!
Alyson, picking up the burger to take a bite: Ooooohhhhhh!!!!

Second

Something the girls said got "Everything Is Awesome" from the Lego Movie stuck in my head.

Me, singing: Everything is awesome!
Madelyn, singing: Everything is cool when you're part of a team!
Alyson, singing: Everything is applesauce!

As I was getting ready to fix dinner, Alyson wanted to play on the old iPhone she gets to use sometimes.

Alyson: Can I watch something on my phone?
Me: No.
Alyson, pouting: Why not?
Me: Because I'm a big meanie.
Madelyn: No, you're not.
Alyson: You're a big mommy! Mommy is supposed to say, "Yes."

10 January 2016

This morning, Madelyn was mad that we wouldn't let her open a new Lego set when there was about five minutes until breakfast would be ready and then we needed to go to Mass. She stormed off and hid in the playroom. Alyson then asked, "Where's Madelyn? Being mad or being happy?" Yup, she knew her sister was mad.

09 January 2016

Madelyn and Alyson were playing a game called Suspend for the first time this afternoon. The idea is that there are metal rods with straight parts and bends in them that you hang on the pieces already hanging and try not to knock it all down. Every time Madelyn would put a piece on it, Alyson would cover her face with her hands and cower in fear of it falling as she begged, "Be careful!"

[After pulling her leggings up she had to repeat one more time.] Legging butt! Legging butt!

06 January 2016

First

The first of two exchanges between the girls today. This one was while Madelyn was building her Legos.

Madelyn: Ooh! Strawberries!
Alyson: I like strawberries.
Madelyn: You can't eat these.
Alyson: But I like strawberries.
Madelyn: These are Legos.
Alyson: I like Legos.
Madelyn: You can't eat Lego strawberries.
Alyson: I know that!

Second

The second exchange that happened while I was cooking pancakes for dinner and Alyson was trying to figure out how she could help.

Madelyn: You can help Mommy by telling her when they are bubbly.
Alyson, running up to me: Mommy, are they bubbly?
Madelyn, yelling to Alyson from the living room: No, you tell her when they are bubbly.
Alyson to me: Are they bubbly?
Madelyn: That's not what I said to do!
Alyson to Madelyn: Then what did you say to do?!

05 January 2016

As we were getting out of the car when we got home this afternoon:

Alyson: When we get home from getting Madelyn at the bus stop, I'm going to go into the playroom and be mad.
Me: Um, okay. Why?
Alyson: Because Madelyn isn't going to want to play with me so I'll be mad.

No, this did not happen. They played when they got home, and there was no hiding mad in the playroom. Not sure where this came from. It was pretty random.

02 January 2016

First

This morning after getting up, Alyson informed us, "Last night when it was present day, Santa brought me these books." She was pointing to some books in her room that she's had for a awhile.

Second

Madelyn was trying to get Alyson to go upstairs for bed so that she could hide the elf doll for Alyson to find tomorrow and was being bossy about it.

Madelyn: Go upstairs, Alyson.
Alyson, concerned: Why are you calling me "Alyson"?

(Madelyn almost always calls her "Aly.")

01 January 2016

During lunch, Madelyn kept kicking her feet at the table and hitting Alyson's feet. Alyson was not too happy about it and very firmly said to Madelyn, "Madelyn, if you kick my shoe, I'm going to kick your shoe. Do you want me to kick your shoe? Yes or no?"
